Rebalance with new cash, without selling

Allocate a cash contribution to underweight holdings so the portfolio moves toward target weights with no sells and no realised gains.

How do I rebalance using only new contributions?

Cash-only rebalancing adds the contribution to total value, computes each holding's shortfall to target, and fills the largest shortfalls first until the cash is used. Overweight holdings are left alone, so no gains are realised.

    Method

    • — New total = current value + contribution; target dollars = weight × new total.
    • — Shortfall = max(0, target dollars − current value) for each holding.
    • — Allocate cash pro rata to shortfalls, then round down to whole shares.

    Limits

Large drifts may need several contributions to close; it never reduces overweight positions.

    Questions

    Is cash-only rebalancing tax efficient?
In taxable accounts it avoids realising gains, because nothing is sold.
