Rebalance a portfolio to target weights

Turn target weights into share-level buy and sell orders: current vs target allocation, drift, cash use and the trades needed to rebalance.

How many shares do I buy or sell to get back to my target weights?

Rebalancing compares each holding's current weight with its target, converts the difference into a dollar amount using total portfolio value, and divides by price to get whole-share orders. Sells fund buys; leftover cash stays as residual.

    Deterministic whole-share planner

    Method

    • — Current weight = position market value ÷ total portfolio value (including cash).
    • — Target dollars = target weight × total value; trade dollars = target − current.
    • — Shares = trade dollars ÷ price, rounded toward zero so orders never overspend cash.
    • — Optional drift band: skip trades where |current − target| is under the threshold.

    Limits

Ignores taxes and transaction costs unless you add them; orders are reviewed before anything is sent to a broker.

    Questions

How often should a portfolio be rebalanced?
Common rules are calendar (quarterly or annual) or threshold-based, trading only when a weight drifts past a band such as 5 percentage points.
Can I rebalance with new cash only?
Yes — directing contributions to underweight holdings avoids sells. See the cash-only rebalance tool.
